The Old Story?

Do we really understand what Jesus has done for us? One sometimes hears stories about people who gave up everything in their lives to spread the gospel in a far-off place. Beautiful.

But what the almighty God has done cannot be compared to any good by a human. We sometimes make the mistake of thinking about Jesus as human, probably because that is how we got to know Him. That dilutes the idea of God becoming a man. Then you don't actually realise what a sacrifice it was for God to come down to earth, to be humbled and to walk on earth as a human being.

We've become so used to the story of Jesus coming to earth that we no longer actually understand what really happened. It has become such common knowledge that we are no longer moved by the fact that Jesus became human, died and rose again, so that we can live.

Maybe we should start with a confession where you and I ask God's forgiveness because we don't really comprehend what He had to go through as almighty God coming to earth to the level of a mere human.

Maybe we should ask forgiveness too for sometimes choosing not to be moved by the idea of God's love for each and every one of us.

Maybe we should ask forgiveness for living such a nice life here on earth that the significance of his coming to earth and dying on the cross do not make any sense to us anymore.

Maybe we should simply go and sit in the corner and in all sincerity confess to God that we are actually incapable of really understanding how He feels about us.

Maybe we should honestly confess and ask God for one more piece of grace.

Jesus was prepared to be humbled. But He was also prepared to die for other people who were and are bad. If we truly understand what is going on here, what impact it has on our future lives:
- we cannot remain untouched and unchanged;

- we cannot but want to do something;

- we cannot but raise praises to this most high King;

- we want to dance in the streets; and

- we have to tell others, because we're afraid some will miss the bus.

Friend, may we live today and tomorrow in such a way that Jesus' humiliation was not unnecessary.

7When the time came, he set aside the privileges of deity and took on the status of a slave, became human! Having become human, he stayed human. 8It was an incredibly humbling process. He didn't claim special privileges. Instead, he lived a selfless, obedient life and then died a selfless, obedient death-and the worst kind of death at that-a crucifixion.

May our lives bear witness to the raised Lord.

May we live in such a way that God will come and fetch us one day and give us a special place with Him.

Bible Reading

    Philippians 2:6-11

Reflection

Where do you have to ask for mercy and grace?

What must you do not to remain unmoved?

How must you change your life so as not to make Jesus' humiliation unnecessary?

Prayer

Lord, how can we really understand deep down what You had to go through? How can we really understand what You brought about for each of us sinners? Teach us to live our lives in such a way that other people can see our gratitude. Amen
