"Receiving God's Merciful Blessings"

Deuteronomy 9:1-6

When we get God's blessing, we often unknowingly feel luckier than anyone else. In fact, it is not uncommon for us to feel ourselves more special before God. But what should a believer's attitude be in responding to the blessings he receives?

Before the Israelites entered the Promised Land, Moses reminded them of the existence of the nations they would face (1-2). The warning was given by Moses to make them aware that they could defeat the nations not solely because of their strength and merits (4-5). If God dispels the nations, it is not because God is more defending the Israelites, but because of the ungodliness of the nations before God.

Moses emphasized that even if the Israelites could occupy the promised land, it was a mere blessing of God's mercy. It was the Lord who gave it to them (6). There was no reason for the Israelites to boast and feel meritorious before God.

When we have all the good and success, we need to realize that it is a blessing of God's mercy. It is not because of our merits that God is obliged to bless our lives. God's blessings are given not based on our accomplishments before Him. In fact, when we survive those who mean evil to us, it is also because of God Himself. God will crush the ungodly around us because of their ungodliness, not because we are more special than everyone else.

So, for every good we receive, we should be grateful for it as a blessing of God's mercy. Do not demean those around us because we feel more loved by God, but we must keep our lives from falling into ungodliness. Nor should we make it the Lord's blessing to compare our lives with others. Let's use each of God's blessings solely to glorify His name.
