Godly Wisdom

Ephesians 5:15-17

It is decision time. We have thought over what we know about a situation, taken into account the knowledge and opinions of others, and assessed the talents and skills available. With some quick prayers to God, we make our choice and proceed. But God’s Word tells us we have gone about this the wrong way. We have used human wisdom instead of His.

Our thinking is limited to what our minds can conceive of and understand—even the smartest among us are unwise if we separate our reasoning from the Lord’s. Our reasoning is also unspiritual. Apart from Christ, our thoughts are governed by our sin nature which always puts “self” first. Finally, the source of our ungodly thinking is demonic. Adam and Eve’s acceptance of Satan’s lies led to our slavery to sin (Romans 6:20) and our propensity to believe the Devil’s words.

On the other hand, godly wisdom seeks to gain the Lord’s viewpoint and respond according to scriptural principles. It asks, “How would God interpret these events? What does God want me to do?” Then it answers these questions based on the truth of the Bible. As new creations in Christ, we are given the capacity to know what pleases and displeases God, and we are also empowered to obey. (1 Corinthians 2:16) Through reliance on the Holy Spirit, we can become wise. (1 Corinthians 1:30)

Wisdom has two components: perspective—that is, how we look at things—and action. Choosing God’s way brings a fruitful life and His approval. Living unwisely brings us outside of God’s will.

Foolishness or wisdom: which will you pursue today?
