How to Establish a Prayer Life

How many of us can even hear God's voice? Do we know how to pay attention to what God is saying to us? Or, are we so busy, noisy, and distracted that we can't even recognize God's voice?

If we allow our mind to fall into a distracted state, which is probably most of us given our media-driven, noisy world, we have to intentionally set up a regular time and quiet place which is conducive to listening to God. In other words, we have to remove ourselves from the hustle and bustle of our lives and focus on God and what we need to tell Him.

Here are some other ways to ensure that we develop a strong prayer life with God who is our ultimate comforter and protector.

Establish a morning and evening routine with God

Upon getting out of bed, turn inward and pray for a few minutes. Say a simple prayer of thanksgiving for a brand new day. Or, say the Our Father. It doesn't really matter what we choose to do as long as we do it consistently every morning before we get out of bed.

Before going to sleep, take stock of the day. How did it go? Do a brief evaluation of conscience. Did we do something nice for someone in need? Were we kind of someone? Did we give someone our time and attention unexpectedly? Or, did we sin? Do we feel bad about what we did? What precipitated our sinning? Was it stress? Being in a constant hurry? Not being conscious of our actions?

This kind of self-assessment can help unburden us before we go to sleep and relax our mind as a way to prepare for a peaceful night. Many times we get to bed and we can't sleep. We keep rehearsing the events of our day over and over again. However, by taking stock of our day with God, we will sleep, this will help us sleep better and live a more holy life tomorrow.

In addition, we should pray before going to sleep. It is a good time to ask God to help us live a more Godly life. That is a wonderful way to actually communicate with God and make sure that we are in tune with Him.

One of the reasons we need to have a prayer routine in place is to start and end the day conversing with God and touching base with Him as we would a good friend. He will help stir us away from our sinful ways and ensure that we are on the right track.

By taking these steps, we will be developing a strong prayer life. In this way, we will be able to cope and live in the modern world. We have to get God on our side. Then it will be easier not to take our busyness so seriously but instead to make space for God so that we can grow spiritually.
