God First

For most of us it is important what others think or say about us. How others see and experience us sometimes become so important that it makes us do some funny things. I wonder why it is so important to fit in or to have the approval of the people around us.

It's not about what others think of us, but rather what God thinks of us. Instead of asking what Sannie or Piet thinks about my new clothes, we should rather ask what God thinks of us.

However, it's not just about what God and people think of us, but also about what they do to us. We are who we are because it's about relationships. The other people in our lives shape us, make us go in new directions, and sometimes help us to get up again. The question is: What is most important in your life? What people do for you or what God does for you?

Yes, God often uses people to help us and to show us the way. But the focus should never shift from God. Man may never take God's place in our lives.

3The real believers are the ones the Spirit of God leads to work away at this ministry, filling the air with Christ's praise as we do it. We couldn't carry this off by our own efforts, and we know it-even though we can list what many might think are impressive credentials.

Who is at the centre of your life? What is most important to you? To be acceptable to people? Or is it important to you that God is everything in your life?

We live in the physical presence of people all the time and therefore it is important to us what they think of us. What they do for and to us is just as important, but should never be allowed to be more prominent than God's work in our lives. At all times we must put God's work of salvation at the centre of our lives.

God is the One who reached out to us. He sent his Son to earth to help us get to heaven. If not for Jesus, we would've had to live without God forever. He is at the centre of our lives. He is the beginning and the end. He is everything in our lives - and that should be our starting point. He must be the cornerstone on which we build everything else.

Paul wrote this verse in response to the question whether circumcision was still important. The people really struggled with this question and did not know what was right. And that is why Paul told them that what people do was not a patch on what God did for us.

Paul opens our eyes again. We are so easily persuaded by what people say and do that it becomes more important than how God feels about it. We shouldn't allow people to become more important than God. People can easily lead us astray, but God will never do it.

God never changes. God stands firm. God's message stays the same. What we must do is to ensure that God remains at the centre of our lives. We must remember that He touched us and that is why we are different. We are children of God. He is our Father and the most important in our lives. We must ensure that God remains at the centre of our lives all the time.

Bible Reading

   Philippians 3:1-3

Reflection

Who is most important to you?

Is God at the centre of your life?

What does it mean that God has touched you?

Prayer

Father, outward appearances are not important to You. What is important to You, is what is going on in our hearts. May the work of your Holy Spirit become more visible in us than what we pretend to be on the outside. Amen
