Are you pragmatic, idealistic, or a pragmatic idealist? Quality
leader must possess a combination of both of these characteristics,
being willing and able to recognize truth and reality, while proceeding
with a positive, can - do attitude, and maintaining a more idealistic
vision, for the future. If one denies facts, he often avoids taking
necessary actions in a timely manner. At the same time, if he merely
accepts what is, rather than seeking what might (and should) be, he will
fail to inspire, motivate, or reach for the best goals, principles,
etc. Therefore, lets briefly examine, proper leadership IDEALS.
1. Integrity; imagination; ideas: Everything a true leader does, must be based on as near to absolute integrity, as possible. Never squander your integrity, for the sake of expedience or popularity! Proceed with the right sort of imagination, which uses what is currently, and imagines what could and should be, and helps you create, develop and implement, both a strategic and action plan, to get things achieved properly! You aren't acting as a true leader if you merely remaining in the security of your personal comfort zone, and are satisfied with the same - old, same - old ways! True leaders must imagine, develop, create, and implement ideas, focused on needs, priorities, and concerns.
2. Delve deeply; deliver: Go far beyond what other's see, because they only look at the surface or obvious! Great leaders consistently take the time, and make the effort, to delve deeply, and examine/ consider/ ponder alternatives and options. However, it is not enough to address concerns with rhetoric, but rather, the measure of a real leader, is whether he delivers on his promises.
3. Empathy; energy; example: Will you maintain the level of empathy, required for meaningful leadership? Will you enthuse and energize others, because of your consistently high level, of demonstrable energy? Will your constituents point to your example, as something to aspire to, and respect?
4. Attitude; attention: Face reality, but rather than merely accepting things, as they are, focus on ways to move towards, how they should, and can be! Will you maintain a positive, can - do attitude, because only when a leader does, will others follow? What will you pay most of your attention to?
5. Listen; learn; leading: You don't have all the answers, and your perceptions offer differ from those of your constituents, for any number of reasons! Listen effectively, so you are better able to perceive things, as your stakeholders do! Learn what they are concerned about, and address them! Leading others effectively, only occurs, when one is true to the best, finest, most - focused ideals!
6. Stronger; sustainable system: What will you do, in order to leave your organization stronger, than you found it? A true leader envisions, creates, develops and implements a well - conceived, relevant, sustainable system!
