Leaders often discover, there is a fine line between their
attempt to remain flexible, and open - minded, while simultaneously
maintaining the finest PRINCIPLES! In my four decades
of identifying, qualifying, training, developing, and consulting to
thousands of actual and/ or potential leaders, I've always stressed the
need to maintain an open - mind, avoid prejudgment, and fairly consider
options and alternatives. However, I have come to realize and
understand, many do so, without considering some of the other essential
characteristics of being a true leader, including being ethical, seeking
excellence rather than expediency, and doing the right thing, rather
than what might be popular! Unless someone masters this discipline, he
will generally struggle, in trying to achieve the proper objectives, and
effectively addressing needs, concerns and priorities, in a relevant,
sustainable manner.
1. Priorities; perspective: It's not merely about doing something, appearing busy, or even believing you are! One must focus on priorities, and avoid sweating the petty stuff! This will enable a proper perspective, focused on the ethical, moral, relevant, and effective way, to transform challenges and obstacles, to viable solutions.
2. Relevant; real: Avoid the rhetoric - trap! Empty promises and strident rhetoric may attract certain voters, but one must transform from a politician, to a statesman, if he wants to lead, effectively! While you want to maintain a positive, can - do attitude, avoid wearing rose - colored glasses, and keep it real!
3. Integrity; ideology: If you are either unable or unwilling to commit to maintaining absolute integrity, even when taking a short - cut might be convenient and easier, then, you probably shouldn't be a leader! Consider if your ideology is in sync with your organization!
4. Needs: Isn't leading, all about addressing needs, in a way, which best serves the organization, and its stakeholders? Only needs - oriented leadership positions someone to do what's right!
5. Clear - cut; character: Some decisions are complex, but one's behavior, attitude, commitment to ethics and principles, mindset, and integrity, must be clear - cut, and consistent! It's how one measures the quality of a leader's character!
6. Ideas: Should you be proud of the caliber of your ideas? Do they represent focused thinking, a good level of understanding, and a willingness to address what needs to be done, in a timely, well - considered, prepared manner?
7. Planning: There are no born leaders, despite what some may want you to believe! Quality leaders work hard to become knowledgeable, prepared, and in control of what needs to get done. They understand and utilize the essential basis and steps of professionally planning, etc!
8. Listen; learn: Beware of anyone in a position of leadership, who believes he knows - it - all, and therefore acts in a rigid, inflexible manner! One only becomes an effective leader, if he learns to listen effectively to those he serves, and learns what their concerns, needs and priorities are, and determines a strategy to address these!
9. Empathy; energy; example: Listening and learning puts one in the best position to proceed with empathy, and better understand the perceptions of constituents! The level of a leader's energy, often becomes that of his group! Are you behaving in a way, where others may point to you, as an example to emulate and respect?
10. Sustainable system: Never over - react to current concerns, but rather put them into perspective, and address them, in a way, which will promote a relevant, sustainable system!
Are your PRINCIPLES up to the task? Know yourself, and become the best you can be!
