You Can Mindfully Live in a Big City

By Irene Roth

Many of us believe that it is hard to live mindfully in a busy city. However, most of us live with more noise than ever, whether we live in a big city or a smaller town. Therefore, we need to devise steps to remove ourselves from the noise and from the busyness in order to rekindle our mental balance and mindfulness.

In this article, I will show you how to be mindful, wherever you find yourself. This is because mindfulness is a state of mind. Therefore, the physical environment should not matter to our fostering mindfulness. In other words, we can cultivate peace, presence and purpose in the middle of it all.

Here are a few tips to ensure that you can do this.

1. Take some time to remove yourself from the noise a few times a day. You could do this by looking down, if it is safe to do so. Ideally, go into a private place where you will be undisturbed and that is relatively quiet.

2. Focus on your breath and take a few long, deep breaths. Breathe in to a count five and breathe out to a count of five. Do this for four or five rounds, and then return to whatever you are doing.

3. Devise a day of silence a week. During this day, try and remove yourself from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. We all need to recharge our batteries. So, one day a week is a good rule of thumb to maintain balance and peace of mind.

4. Make sure that you unplug a few hours a day. This will also give you another opportunity to focus on other things such as reading and doing things that you love such as your hobbies.

5. Make some time for rest and recreation every day. But during such times, please be sure not to go to parties or other events that are loud. Preferably, do things alone or with no more than one other person.

6. Spend some time in solitude every day. Even if it is for twenty to thirty minutes, this time should become sacrosanct for you to develop mindfulness and to be peaceful.

7. Do at least one to two, ten minute meditations every day. This will show you how your mind feels when it is at ease. Then you could cultivate this feeling of freedom and peace of mind wherever you are.

By taking these steps, you will be cultivating mindfulness in your everyday life. And you will also live in ways that are healthier and more mindful.

Noise causes anxiety for us over time. So do our technological gadgets if we overuse them and are always plugged in. We can all live mindfully, even if we live in a big city. We can do that by developing peace of mind and mindfulness. Your health and well-being depend on it.
