Will The Mid-Term Elections Be About Issues, Or Trump?
2017 was a political year, like no other, in recent memory! Whether one is a supporter or detractor, of the President, it must be agreed, we have rarely witnessed, anyone serving in that position, similar to Donald Trump. His combination of personality, rhetoric, use of Social Media, polarizing influence, and, apparent lying and misstatements, have dominated news coverage, and our citizen's mindsets. History has indicated, when the same political party, controls both the Congress, as well as the White House, we often witness, some degree of mid - term changes, and loss of political influence. for the existing dominant party. While some feel, voters might be influenced, by either an unpopular tax reform legislation, or loss of certain freedoms, or lack of keeping promises made, or threatening health and welfare protections, and safety nets, the 2018 elections, might be influenced, to a far greater degree, by how some, consider, Mr. Trump's so - called, mandate. This article will briefly examine, and consider, 5 potential factors, and/ or questions, voters might consider.
1. Are you better off? It's not uncommon, for voters to consider, whether, they feel, they are better off, than they were, previously. While both, Trump, and his predecessor, President Obama, had both, supporters, and opponents, never have the differences, seemed so significant, and/ or apparent! Will voters believe, the tax legislation, and the impacts on health care, have been beneficial? Will they think, President Trump, has kept his promises, and/ or his Presidency, has been good, for them?
2. Do you believe, he's kept his promises? Have President Trump's promises, and rhetoric, aligned with, his actions, of the past year? Even more so, do those who voted for him, in 2016, beyond his core supporters, and followers, perceive he has effectively served, and represented them, as he said he would?
3. Has he taken us in the right direction, and do we feel safer today? In most cases, voters vote, according to their perceptions! Will they believe, Trump's rhetoric, and aggressive, polarizing actions and language, make us safer, or, more, at - risk? Will they feel they are better served when Congress has prioritized policy and people, over party politics?
4. Do you believe the accusations, or his denials? Who do you trust more, Trump, or the media? How many Americans will still believe this President, and his denials, and accusations, when he calls the media's reports, Fake News? Will the continued investigations, especially regarding, Russia, create a voters' revolt, against the existing government, and his party?
5. How has his rhetoric influenced you? Have you been inspired, or turned - off, by Trump's style, rhetoric, use of Social Media, and apparent compulsion, to resort to lying, misstatements, and/ or half - truths?
We won't know for certain, whether the mid - elections, are based, more on policies and politics, or be some sort of referendum on Donald Trump! However, there can be little doubt, November 2018's elections, will be extremely significant.
