Wake-Up, America: Demand Less - Partisan Government: 5 Examples
While America would probably, be best - served, with either, non - partisan. or bipartisan leadership, we are apparently, witnessing less cooperation, than at any time, in recent memory! How often, in the last year, have we witnessed, politicians placing politics and/ or a political agenda, ahead of quality policy and/ or the best interests of our citizens? A few years ago, I had the pleasure of attending a lecture, given by former Senator Bill Bradley. Mr. Bradley was not only a U.S. Senator from New Jersey, but a Princeton graduate, Rhodes Scholar, and professional basketball (who played for the championship seasons, of the New York Knocks. During that presentation, he stated, what we need, is a greater degree of cooperation, rather than partisan governments. Michael Bloomberg, former 3 - term Mayor of New York City, and one of the ten wealthiest individuals, supports candidates, from either political party, who appear, ready, willing and able, to reach across the aisle, and work together, for the common good. This article, therefore, will briefly examine and discuss, 5 examples, of issues/ items, currently going on, which seem contrary to this cooperative spirit.
1. Freedoms/ rights: The greatness of America, is based on its focus on providing several freedoms, to all its citizens. Since this nation, is a country based on immigrants, what makes us unique, is providing equal rights and freedom, to all, regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, and/ or politics! In November, 2016, we elected a man, as President of the United States, who has often articulated a message, with vitriol - loaded rhetoric, and pitting one segment of our nation against another. While, perhaps, an effective political strategy, for Donald Trump, it has created the most polarizing, adversarial atmosphere, in recent memory!
2. Qualified judicial appointments: One of the core ingredients of this nation, is having 3 separate, but equal, components of government, so as to provide checks - and - balances, and protect our freedom and rights. While certain judges might be more or less liberal/ progressive, or conservative, we have generally witnessed appointments of qualified individuals. Never before, in recent memory. have we witnessed, as many instances of a President appointing, as many judges, which have appeared unqualified! Isn't that a danger to our long - term, way of life?
3. Integrity/ truth: While we should welcome differences of opinion, and honest political difference, these must, and should, be based on absolute integrity! Shouldn't our leaders tell us the truth, and let us make quality decisions?
4. Policy/ people, over politics: In the past year, almost every major legislative vote, has been, almost entirely, along party lines! If people are to be properly served, shouldn't there be a greater focus and attempt, to provide a commitment to bipartisan cooperation?
5. Examining foreign interference: Whether one is conservative or progressive, shouldn't we all, do, all we can, to ensure our elections, and process, is fair and free? The same Republican leaders, who for years, proclaimed how aggressively, they would protect this nation, have appeared to do all they can, to avoid a thorough examination, of any potential Russian interference, in our elections, even though, nearly every intelligence agency, has warned us, there was!
Wake - up America, because, unless, we do something, soon, we will end up, with a country, we no longer recognize! Tell your elected officials, their duty is to you, to represent your best interest, rather than any personal, political agenda!
