Congratulations! You've ascended to a position of leadership, and
have made the very personal decision, to become the best, most
effective, meaningful leader, you can possibly be. One of the first
things, you need to understand, is, one cannot be a leader, in a vacuum,
and, therefore, you must identify, and seek out, the right people, to
serve as either your official, or unofficial, inner circle, of trusted
advisers. These individuals must have certain skills, and aptitudes,
which will enhance your abilities, and not merely be a set of yes - men.
There must be a balance, where they are both loyal, as well as willing
to speak openly, to you, when they disagree, about any aspect of
leading. Beware that many will be attracted to you, because they
perceive power, etc, and, therefore, you must be ready, willing and
able, to examine, introspectively and objectively, your leadership RELATIONSHIPS.
1. Relate; relevant; real; reliable: You don't need to agree with your advisers, but you must be able to relate to each other, in a non - adversarial manner! They must be reliable, and offer their genuine, real opinions and suggestions. There is no effective leadership, unless a leader selects a relevant path/ course!
2. Empathy; evaluate; examine: Choose individuals with an empathetic perspective, who are open to alternatives, and will focus on needs, priorities and concerns! They must help you evaluate a variety of matters, in an objective, service - oriented way! One's leadership relationships can either be a help, or a hindrance, depending whether they help one to thoroughly examine alternatives, and make the best choices/ decisions.
3. Listen; learn: Avoid advisers who are closed - minded, and seem to believe they nor only have the answers all the time, but the only ones! Your group should assist you, so you can better listen, and learn what the concerns of constituents are.
4. Attitude; aptitude; attention; achieve: Put together an inner circle, who have a true, positive, can - do attitude! Find those whose skills and aptitudes, compliment yours! They should help you focus, and pay attention, to what needs to be done. Your group should be able to benefit, if they help you achieve, the best set of objectives!
5. Timely; trends; trust: You don't need to like, or be friends, with your group, but you must feel comfortable with them, and feel you can trust them! Together, identify relative trends, and proceed in a timely, well - considered manner.
6. Ideas: What good are your relationships, if they don't help you, produce quality ideas, and proceed ahead?
7. Options; opportunities: There's rarely only one way, so try to identify options, and contingency plans. The difference between truly effective leaders, and wannabes, is often, whether someone takes advantage of
opportunities!
8. Needs: Great leadership is based on addressing needs, concerns and priorities. Do the people you depend upon, help you in the best direction?
9. Strengthens: Your team must work together, for the common good. You are the leader, but you must feed off each other's positive energy, in a strengthening way!
10. Head/ heart: Be careful to balance emotional appeals, with logical plans. Think of that, as your head/ heart balance.
11. Integrity; inspiration: Seek only individuals you feel, you can trust, and who possess the necessary degree of integrity! They must be your inspiration, and you must also inspire them!
12. Planning; priorities: Plan in advance, and do so, as thoroughly, as possible! The focus of your efforts, should be addressing priorities, and planning for the best future!
13. Sustainable system: Remember, whether one is a great or ineffective leader, his term is usually a finite one! Therefore, great leaders understand, it is their responsibility, to create, develop, introduce, and implement, a quality, sustainable system!
Who will you select, to be part of your leadership team? Examine RELATIONSHIPS, and carefully make the best decisions and determinations!
