Very Simple Ways To Care For The Environment

The physical and biological life forms combine together to form a vast environment. There are a number of problems that crop up in the environment due to the never ending demands of the humans from nature. Ozone depletion, pollution, population and global warming are included in these dangerous problems. The biosphere of the earth cannot tolerate these situations anymore and the result is getting worse with each passing day.

Here is a list of few steps by which you can save the environment.

Quit smoking
Smoking is one of the life threatening habits that are affecting the environment. It is a harmful air pollutant that not only harms your health, but the health of the people around you as well.

Don't use plastic
Plastic bags are still used carelessly in spite of the fact that they are one of the major reasons of global warming. These plastic bags are dumped in the land fill sites or thrown away with organic waste. It should be recycled or reused in order to save the environment.

Add house plants to your home
You can reduce unhealthy pollutants in your house by having a house plant. It helps to maintain your room temperature and also to purify indoor foul air.

Conserve water
Water is the most essential need for survival which is getting scarce with each day. Save water so that you can conserve it for future use. Follow the ways that can help decrease water wastage.

Conserve electricity
Opt for fluorescent light bulbs instead of incandescent light bulbs to save electricity. Do unplug your electronic devices like computer, television, etc. when not in use. Use solar lights whenever possible.

Kitchen waste management
It is very important to manage kitchen waste in order to save the environment. Buy a stainless steel kitchen composter with carbon filters for depositing kitchen waste. It can help to make this process odourless.

Use public transportation
Private transportation adds more carbon dioxide in the environment than a public transportation. Opt for walking whenever possible to avoid riding private transport. This can not only help to make you fit, but it can also save fuel.

Save trees by reducing use of paper
Try to reduce the use of paper as much as possible. Switch to the Internet to read news instead of buying newspaper. Reuse paper by making it two halves for writing purpose. Use hand towels instead of paper tissues.

Thus, do try to follow these basic steps to contribute to save the environment from the various natural problems.

E-Waste and the Importance of Electronic Recycling

Society can immensely benefit with new cheap electronic devices. This explosive growth of electronics has made e-waste an important issue. E-waste is a growing concern which needs to be tackled effectively. Industry, policy makers and consumers are giving much attention to this issue. There are many consumers who do not know the actual process of recycling old electronics safely. So, it is important that they gain knowledge on the issue.

What is e-waste?
Devices like stereo, mobile phones, televisions and dated computer equipments are known as e-scrap, e-waste and end-of-life (EOL) electronic devices. You can recycle or refurbish these devices, though there are still large amounts of e-waste yet to be dumped to landfills. The rate of recycling is still very inadequate due to improper knowledge of people about this process.

Why is electronics recycling important?
Rich Source of Raw Material
Only 10%-15% of gold can be recovered in e-waste worldwide. It is said that deposits of precious metals are contained by electronic waste that estimate between 40 and 50 times costlier and richer than the ores within the earth's surface.

Solid Waste Management
Solid electronic wastes have rapidly escalated due to the combination of short product life cycle and the explosive growth in the field of electronics industry.

Toxic Materials
Toxic materials such as mercury, lead, chromium and cadmium are contained by old electronic devices. So it is very essential to make sure that these electronic items go through proper processing, so that these devices do not release toxic gases in the environment. Potentially toxic chemical flame retardants and other heavy metals are also contained by these electronic devices as well.
International Movement of Hazardous Waste

This international movement of electronic waste is going uncontrollable in some countries. This is because of the availability of cheap labor and old approaches to recycling of electronic wastes. This has resulted in risks of health to the local inhabitants of these countries. It has become an issue of great concern because these local residents are continuously exposed to the release of harmful toxic gases in the environment.

How can consumers recycle their old electronic devices?
Many recycling opportunities have been accessed by consumers according to the places where they live. The best way is to give computer equipments to those who need them and that can be used or refurbished. Remove all the personal information from the devices before donating them. Electronic recycling, authorized electronic recycler locations or corporate take back programs are included in other recycling opportunities. You can also recycle your batteries and cellphones with the help of other recycling programs that are available to aid consumers.

Thus, follow different e-waste recycling programs in order to refurbish or recycle them carefully and safely.

President Trump: Can We Rely On The Mainstream Media To Tell Us What Trump Is Doing?

If someone lives in America, they are likely to know that Donald Trump is the new president of America. But even if they don't live there, this could still be something that they are aware of.

What this comes down to is how connected people are in today's world, and this is largely down to the internet. As soon as something takes place in another country, people from all over the world can hear about it.

One Country
It can then be as if there are no longer different countries, and that everyone lives in the same country. And, through being able to go online, it could be said that it is down to someone to decide how informed they want to be.

If they want to be ignorant about what is taking place in the world, they can be, but if they want to be informed about what is taking place this will also be an option. What this means is that one can not only be pleased/displeased about what is going on in their own country, they can have this experience when it comes to other countries.

An Opinion
So, regardless of where one lives in the world, they are likely to have something to say about the new president in the white house. On one hand, they could believe that he is the best person for the job.

In this case, they are going to be pleased about how the election ended, and they might be looking forward to what will happen. Along with this, some of the decisions he has already made might also please them.

The Other Extreme
On the other hand, they could still be in state of shock over the fact that it is Trump and not Hillary in the white house. Still, even if they are experiencing life in this way, it may have been possible for them to carry on with their life.

At the same time, what has happened could still consume their mind, and it could then be challenge for them to function as they usually would. One may then stay up to date with what he is doing, or they might do what they can to get away from it all.

In The Middle
And, while there will be people on each side of the spectrum, there will be people who are on the sidelines, so to speak. During the election, these people may have believed that both candidates were as bad as each other.

Now that this stage is over, and there is someone else in the white house, they could believe that the same problems are still going to exist. There is then going to be no reason for them to get caught up in what is taking place.

Personal Responsibility
In addition to this, one could believe that they have their own part to play, and that an external figure is not going to change their life. Thus, no matter who is the president, it will be necessary for them to do what they can to change their circumstances.

And, if someone did vote for a candidate and they believe in playing their part, it will be easier for them to handle it if the person they voted for didn't win. Yet, if the person they voted for did win, this could stop them from seeing the president as some kind of saviour.

Staying Connected
When it comes to staying up to date with what president Trump is doing, it can be normal for someone to look towards the mainstream media. There is the chance that they looked towards this source during the election.

And, due to the position that he now holds, this source is going to spend a lot of time talking about him. In a way, it could be said that this is going to be no different to how it was before, and this is because this source spent a lot of time talking about him during the election.

One-Sided
Nevertheless, when the election was taking place, it was said that the mainstream media wasn't interested in treating each candidate in the same way. And how this source did everything they could to get Hillary Clinton into the white house.

This could be hard to believe; especially if someone thinks that the mainstream media only exists to inform people. As a result of this, Hillary didn't have to worry about this source of information presenting her in a negative light.

Another Source
But if it wasn't for the alternative media, it would have stopped a lot of people from finding out about the side of Hillary that the mainstream media didn't present. One way of looking at it would be to say that this source of information did what the mainstream should have done.

And shortly after Trump won the election, the mainstream media carried on going in the same direction. So instead of opening up about the fact that they lied to people, they came up with the term 'fake news'.

The Reason
This was then a way for them to avoid taking responsibility for letting people down, and to try to discredit the sources that were informing people about what was actually taking place. It was clear that their power was on the wane, and this was a way to maintain their own existence.

And as based on how they responded after the election, it was clear to see that they were not going to change their ways. With this in mind, it could be said that even though the election is over, their agenda is still the same.

Conclusion
Therefore, if the mainstream media was only interested in getting Hillary elected during the election, why would they be interested in informing people about what Trump is actually doing now that he is president of America? It might be more accurate to say that they will continue to do everything they can to paint him in a negative light.

And regardless of whether someone likes him or not, it is going to be vital for them to find out about what he is doing as opposed to what the media says he is doing. If this is something that one agrees with, then it might be a good idea for them to look towards the alternative media.

Jallikkattu - Why This Agitation in Tamilnadu by Students, Favouring the Bull-Taming Sports?

A brief introduction of rural sports of Tamilnadu:
Tamilnadu is famous for the cultural sports activities. Kabadi is a common man's game which anybody can take part and which involves enough muscle strength and retention of breath. Another game which is worth mentioning is Gilli which is the fore runner of modern cricket game wherein only two sticks are used by players, the longer stick as bat and the smaller one as the ball. Rural folks from Tamil land are famous for 'silambattam' meaning fighting with long stick. These games involve only human players. The game Jallikkattu involves Bulls being tamed by human force and which remains as the symbol of Tamil culture from time immemorial. Only because animals are part of the game animal lovers portrayed it as cruelty to animals and Government of India banned it. There is a huge protest all over Tamilnadu to restore the sports saying that it is a blow to the long living Tamil culture. In addition to cultural issues, the issue involves several complicated issues like a ban on PETA, against opening market to international companies, banning of bottled drinks etc. A brief account on the real issues involved are given in this article.

What is 'jallikkattu?'
Though jallikkattu is a game of taming of the bulls, the translation of the word is different. A treasure of coins (jalli) would be tied in a cloth bundle (Kattu) to the hump of the raging bulls. The bold youth in dozens would try to tame the bull, most of them fail, the brave one who tames the bull by embracing the hump, thereby bringing the bull under perfect control. It is for this reason the game is otherwise known in ancient Tamil literature "Eru (Bull) thazuvudhal (embracing)".

In fact it is a dangerous game which involves danger to human lives. The Horns are usually sharpened like pointed knives and most of the times they pierce and many youth had died in this sports. Certain bulls are reserved only for this purpose and are fed sumptuously for the entire year. The bull taming function will be held on "Mattu pongal" (bull festival following the harvest festival which usually falls on 15th January every year). The practice of young and pretty girls garlanding and marrying only those youth who tame the most adamant bull is still in vogue in some parts of the South. Both the winner (prospective bridegroom) and the tamed bull be brought in procession all-round the village and will be poured with gifts and ornaments.

The principal cause for the agitation:
PETA (India)( People for Ethical Treatment to Animals) is the Indian chapter of the International organisation with headquarters at New York (U.S). They are working for the welfare of animals by fighting against cruelty to animals. They presented their case at Madurai court and got a ban against jallikkattu in 2014 for the simple reason that animals cannot be used for entertainment. So Jallikkattu had not been held for two consecutive years of 2015 and 2016. But this year, people were adamant that jallikkattu should be held without fail on Mattu Pongal day (15.1.2017). Honourable judge did not give a favourable judgement. From 17.1.17, students assembled in lakhs at Marina, Chennai and other centres like Madurai, Coimbatore, Salem, Trichy and more importantly at Alanganallur. (The main place where jallikkattu were held). The students assembled in lakhs and were having silent protest who were later joined by non-students also. The world famous Marina beach had an assembly of nearly a million protesters.

Certain special features of the protest:
The protest had several special features. Firstly it did not have any specific organiser. Messages were sent by electronic gadgets using face book, what's up and people converged of their own. It did not have any political backing nor political leader to lead them. This agitation may be called first of its kind using only I.T support. Students were having sit-in demonstration for six days without any mishap.

Demands made by the protesters:
They wanted complete restoration of Jallikkattu I.e the game of taming of bull as held in years prior to January 2015. But soon, the demand culminated in total ban of PETA in India.

What were the grievances against PETA?:
The agitators alleged that PETS, in the name of Ethical treatment to animals are spreading foreign products in India thereby annihilating indigenous produce. These include purified water bottles, drinks, snack and so on. They were compared to East India Company, who in the pretext of having business contacts brought entire India under their control which was later taken over by British Kingdom. Curiously enough, PETA, instead of allaying the genuine fear and promoting their mission, put some valueless arguments in their favour. Local leaders of PETA gave interviews which added fuel to fire.

The agitation continued for 6 days. The most noteworthy feature of the agitation was that it was held as a peaceful demonstration like that of Gandhi. After six days, the agitators got victory in getting a law passed in the legislative assembly for holding jallikkattu as usual.
It is too early to state that the victory is final. There may be legal obstacles to follow.

Yet, in post independent India, for the first time, a peaceful demonstration without any religious, caste or political bias had been held with success. Another most noteworthy aspect is that it was not guided by politicians nor it had any particular leadership. It was fully a voluntary participation by students using electronic gadgets alone as their aid for their fight for restoration of their right to play the sport.

Really, it is a good beginning.

A Perspective on Suffering

The subject of suffering has presented the Believer with more questions than answers. Suffering transcends the triune nature of man. Our spirit, soul, and body are susceptible to the painful sensations and impressions that inflict our lives. Is there a purpose to our sufferings? Why do we suffer? Is suffering a normal aspect of our life? We know that when we deviate from God's will, we are susceptible to wrong decisions and the consequential results. This type of suffering is negative and harmful. It is a debilitating experience that can lead to despair and discouragement. Satan will use this type of suffering to question God's love. "If God really loves you, why does He let you suffer?" "Why doesn't He answer your prayers?" Satan also loves to take situations in peoples lives and transfer the causes and results to God's initiative. There are also friends, and even family members, that will question our spiritual walk. It comes down to the principle of reaping what you sowed. There is a merit to that charge, but it does not fit all the degrees of suffering.

To give us an understanding of suffering, from a spiritual perspective, one needs to look at the last twenty four hours of Jesus' earthly life. From the Garden of Gethsemane, to His abuses at the hands of the Temple soldiers, and finally His crucifixion, Jesus would suffer to the very limits of human tolerance. Before reaching the Garden, He began to display heaviness. He would share with Peter, James, and John that He was "exceeding sorrowful unto death." (Mark 14:33, 34) There in the Garden, Jesus petitioned God with strong crying and tears. (Hebrews 5:7) His suffering was so intense that droplets of blood surfaced on His face and dropped to the ground. (Luke 22:44) Throughout this titanic struggle, it was heard by the angels and God Himself that He feared God (reverenced His sovereignty.) (Hebrews 5:7b) When Jesus cried out that it was not His will that needed to be done, but God's, He was learning obedience through His suffering. (Hebrews 5:8) Obedience is the doorway to spiritual growth and fulfillment. The Faith walk is not an easy journey. Through our ordered steps, we will meet challenges that will try our faith to the very limits of tolerance. There will be persecutions, both physically and mentally. But it is through these sufferings that we will learn obedience. One of the things that helped Jesus confront His sufferings was what He saw on the other side of the Cross. Jesus knew that when His work was done, He would sit down at the right hand of God. Dying to His human desires, He resolved to complete the task that God had sent Him to earth to do.

We need to look at suffering as a means of defining our faith. Through suffering we will learn obedience. Through suffering we will learn what prioritizing means. Through suffering we will understand it is not our will that matters, but God's will. Through suffering we will truly understand God's sovereignty. Through suffering we will learn the true meaning of fearing God.

So many Believers fail to understand the purpose of suffering. When we read the epistles of Paul, we are immediately aware of how he learned through suffering. Let us identify the difference between suffering due to our mistakes and suffering as learning obedience. I wonder how many of us have really suffered to the point of reaching beyond our own desires and learning what obedience is all about? Sadly, many Believers have been taught a gospel that takes little or no real commitment. Some of the greatest truths have been discovered through suffering. Instead of demonizing suffering, let us discover what we can learn through suffering. Paul was able to travel the road to Heaven, with the reality that it was no longer his life, but Christ that lived in him. (Galatians 2: 20)

The World Of Now

Never before in American history has a President started his first term with the lowest approval rating. Here sits an incumbent President who flat out relishes and embellishes his own brand of narcissism. Within just a week into his Presidency he has crossed the line in ethics, violated protocols, and moved this nation closer to starting World War III. With a few strokes of the pen in Executive Orders he continues to slice and dice every major accomplishment that President Obama undertook in promoting world peace, renewable green energy technologies, and infrastructure restoration. That includes upgrading our electric grid to the point that rolling blackouts and other disturbances would not occur.

In his zeal and lust for power and control over the American public he continues to unleash policies through Executive privilege. This is something he wanted all along. We, the unsuspecting public were fooled into believing his rhetoric when the election was taking place. Too many were beguiled into thinking he actually wanted to make as he puts it "Make America Great Again." But, like a wolf in sheep's clothing he managed to pull the wool over so many eyes and we woke up learning that the unthinkable became a reality.

Now, as he puts gag orders over federal employees in his denial in climate change, ushers in the renewal of the Keystone Pipe line and is attempting to put a 20% tax on goods coming from Mexico to pay for that insidious boarder wall all will have devastating effects on every segment of the population. If you think food prices are high now just wait. On top of that in five years or less more than 40% of our population will be priced out of fresh water in we let Trump get away with all that he wants to do in making America Great Again.

As we focus on the Keystone Pipe Line many don't know what these pipe lines actually can cause in relation to our environment. It was when Trump was nominated back in July that an oil pipe line in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan broke open and spilled thousands of gallons of crude oil into the Saskatchewan River. The broken pipe line is owned by Husky Energy Inc. The effects were immediate causing the town of North Battleford to immediately shut down it's water intake from the Saskatchewan River. It is the Saskatchewan River that is the sole source for fresh water for much of the surrounding towns all along the Saskatchewan River. The effect was immediate forcing thousands of people unable to attain fresh water until an alternate source could be provided. Delay's were unavoidable and like Flint Michigan thousands of people today are still without access to their fresh water resource because of that pipeline leak and another that occurred just last week when Trump was inaugurated.

Think of the coincidence when Trump was nominated. It was then that a pipe line ruptured. And, now another pipe line ruptured on the day when he was sworn in. Could it be that someone or something was trying to tell us something? We may never know but when you factor what else is happening with oil and fracking in the United States has to be a real wake up to our most astute leaders of state. Of course the media is almost totally absent in covering what is occurring in Oklahoma. Oklahoma has now become the epicenter for earthquakes in the US. What the oil industry is continually doing with fracking and drilling in Oklahoma is that they are using high pressure waste water infusion into the ground which in turn forces the earth to respond in the form of earthquakes. Just within the past year there has been over 650 earthquakes all measuring 3.0 or higher on the Richter Scale. It has been every year since the oil industry has been using fracking as a means to extract oil or coal Oklahoma has seen dramatic increases in violent earthquakes.

With Trump now in control and with his designated Secretary of State we should be reassured that our energy will be provided by Big Oil and Gas. As most of the rest of the world is steadily weaning off of fossil fuels the new found Trump Administration is hell bent on providing the American public with outdated, pollution generated and climate change inducer energy sources right from the first industrial revolution. Neanderthal thinking at it's best.

It is time that the American public rise up in unison and challenge the unvisionary policies that the Trump Administration is putting forth. These policies are a real threat to our democracy, our way of life and the peace and stability of the world. There is a plan of direction far removed from the tactics that this President is trying force upon the United States. But, to often the media as well as the elected officials who by the way have an obligation to the American public are oblivious to it. It is too many of today's politicians are solely focused upon the monetary gains their office will provide. If we let Trump run over the American public in his quest for control and power the country that my grandfather and father knew will be no more.

The Vietnamese Lotus Theory

When I stepped into the Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chin Minh City, South Vietnam for the first time in December 2016, I sensed a breeze of optimism and vibrancy in the air. Later I realized that what I have seen in the airport was just the same as what I saw in Ho Chin Minh City during my 5 days stay there, with both the places pulsating with life, vigor, and activities. For a country that has been on the offensive for thousands of years evading various assaults and colonial intent, the optimism that I witnessed in the Vietnamese was quite extraordinary. In fact it was a positive assault on my senses. Today, Vietnam had secured socio-political stability and is known as one of the most dynamic economies in the region with an average growth of 7.5%.

With a population of about 95 million people (as of January, 2017), the Vietnamese had come a long way, reverberating a success note that had placed western and foreign powers including the United States to shame. Vietnam was engrossed in wars, conflicts, invasion and intrusion mostly throughout its existence that it represents an open book truth that the people, be they infants, young or old have all become sort of immune to crisis, conflicts and deadly bloody wars. For a country that has been em-battling conflicts all throughout its growth, the current visible transformation seen in this nation, one of the most bustling economies in South-east Asia, is surely mind- boggling.

In my observation, the prolonged wars and conflicts had prepared the Vietnamese to become very industrious and resourceful. It is a blessing in disguise for the Vietnamese, who are although physically thin, slim and short when compared to the average Asian, they are blessed with a robust patriotism and love for their country, substantiated with a strong urge to work, to be productive and to improve their socio-economic status. I saw fleets of motorcycles mostly women riders plying the streets. Young women in their traditional outfit Ao dai, with debonair smiles, the middle-aged and the old-aged take pride in riding their motorbikes, maneuvering the busy streets of Ho Chin Minh City, formerly known as Saigon.

Vietnam is currently in a period of the golden population structure, i.e. 60% of its population are of working age. As "all wisdom comes by age or office", the incessant wars had bestowed this nation with people of steely willpower and mindsets with extraordinary survival skills come what may. Nothing is wasted in Vietnam. Everything is recycled and put to creative use. The Vietnamese know the value of resources more so when these resources were plundered by colonialists or wiped out by continuous bombing, including the use of hazardous chemicals during the wars especially during the Vietnam-American War.

Though the Vietnamese often despise their colonial conquerors, they have maintain some colonial structures for tourism purposes for instance the Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral built in the late 1880s by the French colonists reinforcing the presence of Catholicism in the mainly Buddhists Vietnam. According to one tourist guide whom I spoke to, the presence of these colonial structures will forever remind the Vietnamese not to take the gained freedom for granted. Another superb treat though left by the French will be the world-famous Vietnamese coffee. Every sip is a joy to the taste buds - thick, creamy coffee brew, and coffee aficionados would surely love it in Vietnam.

Everywhere we went in the main streets of Ho Chin Minh city, calls like 'abang' and 'kakak' can be heard. I was quite surprised with the frequent calls made in the Malay Language (also similar to the Indonesian Language) but my doubts were cleared when I noticed that Malaysian tourists form one of the largest groups visiting Vietnam. The cloth material for the 'Baju Kurung' (The traditional Malay attire worn by Malay women in Malaysia) is widely available here, in a variety of choices and colours prompting Malaysians to grab them cheap, in bulk and sell them back home for a handsome profit.

The entrepreneurial skills and mindsets of the Vietnamese are commendable because they have gone to the extra mile to master an alien language to them - the Malay Language just to prosper their businesses. My all-knowing tour guide confessed to me that most of these businesses send their workers to Malaysia to study the language so that customers will be at ease conversing with them. Some even picked up the language through time and practice, trial and error conversing with customers.

The lotus is of significance to the Vietnamese. The lotus grows in the mud, yet maintains its sanctity by blooming the flower above the mud. The same could be said of the Vietnamese, though devastated by years of conflicts and chaos, they were able to stand aloft, rebuilding their country countless times until what it is today. Their perseverance and love for their country are clearly reflected during my visit to the Cu Chi Tunnels. The entire circumference depicts the war zone and how the Vietnamese evaded the horrific assault by the Americans' who came in with superior weapons' and technological supremacy, simply by hiding in underground tunnels (three floors underground), creating awesome systems of ducts and setting unimaginable deadly traps utilizing wild bamboos, using slippers made from rubber obtained from used tyres and re-producing ammunition from exploded bombs and other remnants.

What I witnessed mesmerized me and I saluted my tour guide out of the respect for an army assembled merely out of peasants, farmers, children and women yet so effective in protecting every inch of the country. These characteristics of being resolute, persevered, creative, innovative and brave can be seen in the Vietnamese people even till this day.

The Vietnamese possess great self-belief in themselves. Their inspirations are derived from supporting each other just like being the beacon of light in the darkness. They would not be able to be as accomplished without the foundation their past leaders have bestowed on them. Their progress do not shallow the fact that they have very strong determination and are not influenced and affected by their past misfortunes. They withstood the harshest of conditions yet remain standing tall till today - strong and tough.

Correspondingly, they remain unaffected by the strains of life. From the sailor's creed, "we cannot direct the winds, but we can direct our sails". It is through the pounding of a serious conflict that we grow. Suffering is the fertilizer for the roots of character. The heroes of life are storm-swept and battle-scarred. The best display of character is seen in those who exhibit the scars from the past. I would like to close with a wonderful quote from Peter F. Drucker - the management consultant guru who said -"The future is difficult to predict but the future are for those who can create it".

Obama: Examples of Deceptive Speech

Here are some examples of deceptive speech from one of former President Obama's Press Conferences, interspersed with my own critical commentary. Hopefully, my refuting statements will seem clarifying and you'll be less likely to be swayed by this type of misleading speech in the future. I wrote it just days after the event in 2013, but never published it before, so in it I address Obama as the current president, since he was still in office at the time. The point of the article is not primarily to vilify Obama, but to clarify the structure of deceptive speech in general.

The following quotes from President Barack Obama were taken from his Press Conference on NSA Surveillance on August 9, 2013.

Obama: I am focused on my number one responsibility as Commander-In-Chief, and that's keeping the American people safe.

Me: Many would argue that the most basic responsibility of the President of the United States is to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution. What does he mean by the word 'safe'? And at what cost to liberty will this so-called safety be won? When Obama and every other President took their oath of office, they solemnly swore that "I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

And in a chat room conversation I stumbled upon, someone (I could not tell what his or her name was) posted the following:

"Just this morning I read a CNN opinion piece by Republican senator Sam Brownback arguing against closing Guantanamo. In the first sentence he says 'The most important responsibility for any president is the safety and security of the American people.' He uses this flawed premise throughout and is seemingly willing to justify any act as long as it keeps Americans safe. Why is this man allowed through the doors of Congress? I, like many Americans, am willing to give up my life in defense of American ideals and freedoms. I would rather die in a terrorist attack than see the Constitution and the American ideals embodied within it weakened or destroyed in the name of protecting me."

This emphasis on the safety and security of the American people may sound reasonable, but until we know exactly what this phrase represents to the President, until we know what values and intentions are driving his efforts to supposedly protect us, until we know specifically what ultimate forms of safety and security he envisions, and exactly what he considers the gravest threats we need protection from, we can't really tell whether we should welcome it or oppose it.

The President then heads in the right direction by claiming that:

Obama: "We have to strike the right balance between protecting our security and preserving our freedoms." [And a few sentences later,] "I called for a review of our surveillance programs. Unfortunately, rather than an orderly and lawful process to debate these issues and come up with appropriate reforms, repeated leaks of classified information have initiated the debate in a very passionate but not always fully-informed way".

Me: Ha! Calling for a review is hardly a courageous or reassuring act, and judging from the fact that Obama was not embarrassed by the facts these leaks exposed, it seems highly likely that a mere 'bad review', hidden from public scrutiny, would have had even less influence on his behavior and policies...

The leaks showed that our surveillance programs were not lawful and orderly to begin with, but were grossly unconstitutional! This makes them not only illegal, but technically treasonous-a deep betrayal of our fundamental premises as a constitutional republic of laws that are supposed to apply as much to the lawgivers as to the law receivers. This has nothing to do with passion. It has to do with gross violations of his oath of office.

Besides, if these leaks are accurate or factual, then how can these leaks possibly prevent an orderly and lawful process to debate them? Simply start with the information gathered in the leaks and go from there. If what you really want is a lawful and orderly debate, nothing about these leaks can prevent it. In fact, these leaks can help assure the public that the debates are addressing the more important points and abuses we have found to exist in secret. If your interest is truly the safety and security of the general population, you would presumably welcome these leaks and thank Snowden for doing his very difficult duty as a responsible American citizen defending the Constitution. Instead, you persecute him. This is very compelling evidence that your interest in public safety, along with protecting our legal rights, is not among your top priorities-in actual fact.

Further, there is, in reality, no such thing as a 'fully-informed way'. We can never, any of us, become 'fully-informed' about anything, particularly a large and complex project. We inevitably have to act with incomplete and partial knowledge and so does the President.

He then goes on to assure us how much he has done to make sure everything is going beautifully well and sufficient safeguards are in place, all the while ignoring the fact that his administration has been found to be in direct, gross violation of basic legal, constitutional guarantees.

He then stresses the importance of American democracy and American openness. In reality, we are NOT a democracy (majority rule), but a constitutional republic (governed by laws that are supposed to apply to all the people regardless of their 'social class' or 'political position'). Far more important to our national health than 'openness' is our vigilance in defending and protecting our constitutional rights and freedoms, regardless of what any or all other countries in the world are committed to or wanting from us.

He suggests what defines us is open debate and democratic process. Open debate? Where have any of the changes his administration initiated that have reduced our constitutionally guaranteed rights and freedoms been subjected to open debate? And again, our process is supposed to depend on constitutional law, not 'democratic process'. What does that really mean, anyway? Decided by the majority of the people sitting in his closed office?

Then he makes many additional assurances before listing the following four specific steps he is going to be taking shortly to "move the debate forward". Again. What debate? The one in his mind? The one behind closed doors? He is assuring us he is making everything all right again, even though he has admitted neither wrongdoing nor any breach of constitutional law. The first of the four steps is:

Obama: "I will work with Congress to pursue appropriate reforms to section 215 of the Patriot Act, the program that collects telephone records."

Me: Aha! So he is referring his authority to illegally collect telephone records to a section of the Patriot Act, which is itself an unconstitutional travesty and a betrayal of the U.S. Constitution. And he's going to patch it up? Why? To make his crimes look less blatant? How will pursuing "appropriate reforms" in an unconstitutional document help assure the rights and privacies of the American people or affect existing unconstitutional practices we've just learned he's committed? He goes on to say:

Obama: "This program is an important tool in our effort to disrupt terrorist plots, and it does not allow the government to listen to any phone calls without a warrant."

Me: So, this 'program' does not allow the government to listen to our calls without a warrant. The implication here is that the government is only allowed to record our telephone conversations without listening to them. That's blatantly unconstitutional surveillance that imparts more potentially-oppressive power to the government than the government was ever intended by the Constitution to possess in the first place.

Obama: "I believe that there are steps we can take to give the American people additional confidence that there are additional safeguards against abuse. For instance, we can take steps to put in place greater oversight, greater transparency, and constraints on the use of this authority."

Me: Recording our telephone conversations is a gross waste of the taxpayers' money to help unconstitutionally 'allowed' illegal surveillance operations and now we're supposed to trust this hugely dangerous power won't be abused because they promise they won't abuse it? They've already trashed the Constitution! The only thing that should give the people confidence is the dismantling and elimination of such expensive and treasonous powers that should never have existed in the first place.

By oversight, the administration typically means they will oversee themselves and let us know if they spot any problems they can tell us about without threatening the national security. They, of course, will decide which items fall into this neat little category. The President obviously doesn't even know how to speak transparently let alone behave and run his administration transparently. What evidence can he point to that could possibly warrant our confidence in his ability and desire to be transparent, open and honest with the American people who pay his salary? And constraints are supposed to make us feel confident? His administration has a consistent history of overturning any constraints that get in their way, including the U. S. Constitution itself by renewing the Patriot Act-a profoundly criminal, anti-American, anti-freedom, and blatantly treasonous act in and of itself.

Obama: "Second, I'll work with Congress to improve the public's confidence in the oversight conducted by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Corps. known as the FISC. The FISC was created by Congress to provide judicial review of certain intelligence activities so that a federal judge must find that our actions are consistent with the Constitution.

Me: We have already repeatedly seen that federal judges can no longer be counted on to uphold the Constitution because the Patriot Act has rendered the Constitution effectively null and void on crucial matters where human rights and freedoms are concerned. Elite 'influence' can now apparently turn federal judges in any direction they want, and some judges have explicitly stated that many Constitutional rights no longer apply. Attorneys have apparently been threatened with disbarment for so much as bringing up in the courtroom, the issue that the Patriot Act is not constitutional. And naturally, because of the open and transparent government the President assures us we have, you already know all about the FISC, right?

Obama: "However, to build greater confidence I think we should consider some additional changes to the FISC. One of the concerns that people raise is that a judge reviewing a request from the government to conduct programmatic surveillance only hears one side of the story. May tilt it too far in favor of security. May not pay enough attention to liberty. And while I've got confidence in the court, and I think they've done a fine job. I think we can provide greater assurances that the court is looking at these issues from both perspectives-security and privacy. So specifically, we can take steps to make sure civil liberties concerns have an independent voice, in appropriate cases, by insuring that the government's position is challenged by an adversary."

Me: What? Is he making up a new form of government as he goes along? As it occurs to him? It's among the government's direct and solemnly sworn official and primary duties to protect our civil liberties! Why do we need a challenging adversary and who the hell is it? Is this challenger elected by the people or appointed by the government? What are his, her or their values? Whose interests do they fundamentally represent? Who is paying them? How much are they being paid?

And dare I ask who gets to decide which cases are 'appropriate'? Doesn't this put all the power to choose if and when to use this undefined 'adversarial power' squarely in the hands of the government it's supposedly put in place to counterbalance? This is quite obviously no protection from government control and dictatorial discretion whatsoever. His promises of increased government oversight amount to the assertion that hey, we are going to watch ourselves much more closely as we do whatever we want to. Who feels a whole lot more confident now? Can I see a show of hands?

Have you ever even heard of the FISC, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Corps? Do you remember the openly transparent debates about it? We are supposed to be governed by Constitutional law, so why are we creating strange new ad hoc international governing bodies? And why has no one I've asked about FISC ever heard of it if our government is operating so openly and transparently as he keeps telling us it is?

And why this obsession with confidence building? Obama is not actually saying he will do anything substantive to assure our constitutional rights. He is only claiming he will build our confidence that he is doing something we want. This is functionally equivalent to saying I will do my utmost to create the impression, to make it appear as if, to persuade the public, to create a credible façade that appeals to as many people as possible, that I am acting in good faith. We're apparently supposed to put all the power into his hands, wait for him to tell us how confident we should be in him, close our eyes, and hope for the best.

Obama: Number three. We can and must be more transparent.

Me: Well, there's a point we can agree upon... Hard to argue with him on this one... We have nearly overwhelming evidence, however, that it was never his intention to be more transparent. His administration seems to be the most secretive one the U.S. has ever had, in spite of numerous campaign promises to the extreme contrary.

Obama: So I've directed the intelligence community to make public as much information about these programs as possible. We've already declassified unprecedented information about the NSA, but we can go further. So at my direction, the Department of Justice will make public, the legal rationale for the government's collection activities under section 215 of the Patriot Act. The NSA is taking steps to put in place a full-time civil liberties and privacy officer, and released information that details its mission, authorities and oversight. And finally, the intelligence community is creating a website that will serve as a hub for further transparency. And this will give Americans, and the world, the ability to learn more about what our intelligence community does, and what it doesn't do, how it carries out its mission and why it does so.

Me: So now he's happily building a propaganda dissemination center on the Internet where he can publish any information he wants without argument or fact checking from anyone... He's going to have the Department of Justice "make public the legal rationale" for his administration's unconstitutional surveillance practices. This is not an ethical or moral rationale, not a humane or constitutional rationale, but a technically legal one. And a legal rationale at that, based on constitutionally illegal assertions under section 215 of a legally invalid document.

Who gets to decide what information 'it is possible' to make public? According to his words, they've already declassified unprecedented information about the NSA. Not unprecedented amounts of information about the NSA, just unprecedented information. Besides indicating that this information had not been released before, the use of the term unprecedented sounds dramatic without divulging anything substantive. What in the hell is 'unprecedented information'? If it is simply information we never had before, then that would be true of any new information.

The NSA has been found to have been conducting grossly unconstitutional activities and, rather than apologizing for these treasonous crimes, rather than expressing remorse and regret, he is now going to use a strictly unconstitutional document called the Patriot Act, to justify his actions and convince the public that the NSA is acting legally because this clearly illegal document says so.

And here he has divulged a bit more about how he is going to protect our privacy. One, count 'em, one single "full-time civil liberties and privacy officer". He forgot to mention what powers this single individual has, if any, but that's irrelevant. He's primarily trying to make us feel more confident we've got our asses covered. I could feel more confident if we didn't need to be assured there's a single person in there defending our interests from the rest. What happens on days when this person is out sick? Do they stop conducting business or get as much done as quickly as possible while this person is out of the building? Do they table certain issues until the next time this person will not be at work, or until he or she returns?

We would be better served by some evidence that the entire government is assuring our interests and protecting our rights and privacies. I suppose at this point, Mr. Obama is fairly confident we simply wouldn't believe that if he told it to us. Especially after denying the NSA has even done anything wrong, and also coming down on top of Snowden for courageously revealing the ugly truth of their crimes, like a house of bricks.

Obama: Fourth, we're forming a high-level group of outside experts to review our entire intelligence and communications technologies. We need new thinking for a new era. We now have to unravel terrorist plots by finding a needle in a haystack of global telecommunications. And meanwhile, technology has given governments, including our own, unprecedented capability to monitor communications. So I'm tasking this independent group to step back and review our capabilities, particularly our surveillance technologies. And they'll consider how we can maintain the trust of the people, how we can make sure there is absolutely no abuse in terms of how these surveillance technologies are used, ask how surveillance impacts our foreign policy, particularly in an age where more and more information is becoming public. And they will provide an interim report in 60 days and a final report by the end of this year so that we can move forward with a better understanding of how these programs impact our security, our privacy, and our foreign policy.

So all these steps are designed to insure that the American people can trust that our efforts are in line with our interests and our values. And to others around the world, I want to make clear, once again, that America is not interested on spying on ordinary people. Our intelligence is focused above all on finding the information that's necessary to protect our people and in many cases protect our allies.

It's true, we have significant capabilities. What's also true is we show a restraint that many governments around the world don't even think to do-refuse to show. That includes, by the way, some of America's most vocal critics. We shouldn't forget the difference between the ability of our government to collect information online under strict guidelines and for narrow purposes, and the willingness of some other governments to throw their own citizens in prison for what they say online.

Me: Well now, this terrorist plot business is indeed a hornet's nest of deception and lies so deep and thick as to be impenetrable in a short rebuttal. If you believe the threat of terrorists is worth giving up our constitutional freedoms for... this is more than I can contradict quickly in such a short space as I have available here. There is substantial evidence on the Internet, however, for those with the determination to more fully understand the facts, that this war against terror is a sham devised to conceal the deeper war against the freedoms and independence and self-sovereignty of the American people. There are so many issues that need to be brought to bear to make this case convincingly, that you'd likely consider me a nutcase if I simply dismissed the issue out of hand with some basic yet radical facts. Instead, I'll push on and let it go for now.

Another group of outside experts. He continues to appoint new experts and create new groups to expand and enlarge the government at his whim... Apparently, the inside experts can't be trusted. This is supposed to inspire our confidence in his administration? We're supposed to believe the outside experts aren't as carefully vetted for 'compatible values' as the inside experts have been?

It's an independent group you say-independent from you Mr. President? Independent of the U.S. Government? Independent of the U.S. Constitution? Independent of those paying their salaries?

You already violated or betrayed many of the major promises you made to get into office, and renewing the Patriot Act, after boldly admitting that it needed to be repealed and promising you would repeal it, is unforgivable regardless of other pressures. It is high treason and you and your predecessor Bush should be jailed for committing the crime as well as every elected representative who voted to approve it. It has effectively ended the reign of the U.S. Constitution in the United States of America.

So, whose interests and whose values are you speaking about? This government has already clearly demonstrated it is not interested in supporting our Constitutional rights and freedoms. Your values, Mr. President, generally scare the hell out of me.

The notion that the United States government has shown restraint is completely ludicrous and will convince only those ignorant of the facts or those who ignore non-mainstream media. We are viewed as thugs, bandits and bullies around the world because of our gross lack of restraint, civility and fair play. The history of our foreign policy alone demonstrates our government is not to be trusted and our domestic policies are becoming increasingly harsh and severe as well.

Even at home-restraint? You can look at our economic, military and political history and see restraint? Where? The U.S. Government is clearly controlled by a mega-wealthy handful of owners having almost no respect for the law, for the welfare of the general population, or for due process. More and more people in every walk of life are realizing that the U.S. has become a police state and is growing more militantly abusive and despotic every year.

Restraint? The country is technically financially bankrupt because political and corporate thugs along with selected banking cartels have robbed the people blind in broad daylight. You mean the restraint of a drunken adolescent on an unbridled joyride? U. S. presidents, intelligence agencies and politicians? Have you never read a newspaper? Give me a break, Mr. President! This is simply ridiculous. The out-of-control budget deficit alone renders this claim an obvious con.

And then you're going to "make sure there is absolutely no abuse in terms of how these surveillance technologies are used"? How are you going to turn self-interested, ambitious and commonly corrupt politicians into saints? Are you planning on telling them to behave? The notion that there could possibly be 'absolutely no abuse' of these extreme powers is an absurd one. Power corrupts and that is why these types of power should not be created, because once they exist, they will most certainly be abused and you know it. If not for their seductive potential for abuse, these costly powers and capabilities would never be produced.

Obama: Let me close with one additional thought. The men and women of our intelligence community work every single day to keep us safe because they love this country and believe in our values. They're patriots. And I believe that those who have lawfully raised their voices on behalf of privacy and civil liberties are also patriots who love our country, and want it to live up to our highest ideals.

So this is how we are going to resolve our differences in the United States, through vigorous public debate, guided by our constitution, with reverence for our history as a nation of laws, and with respect for the facts.

Me: Snowden and many other whistleblowers are patriots judging by your words here, and you have consistently shown them persecution and abuse rather than anything resembling respect for their patriotism. I hear you talking about vigorous public debate but I do not see any. Answering pre-written questions from a list of pre-approved question-askers can hardly be considered a debate, let alone vigorous. According to the U.S. Constitution, Mr. Snowden acted lawfully and courageously on behalf of privacy, civil liberties and the public good, and you have yet to acknowledge your guilt in the illegal activities he raised to public awareness at great personal risk and injury from you and your brutally repressive actions against him and others like him. You have already set the country's all-time presidential record for greatest number of arrests of whistleblowers in the history of the nation. This has been documented in many places. You have repeatedly demonstrated that you use laws as weapons to oppress and control the U. S. citizenry rather than as safeguards to protect them.

Let me close with one additional thought myself, Mr. President. You are not to be believed. This much you have demonstrated in a very transparent fashion.

Why Did God Give Us Winter?

Living in Florida my idea of winter is anytime the temperature drops below 60. At that point, I do the shiver-me-timbers dance. You don't want to know!

I have a rare disease called Coldaphobia. As far as I know, there is no cure for this except escaping to Florida. Even here, cold will manage to sometimes poke its nose into my business. All I can do at the time is sneeze, hoping it will scare the cold away.

Experiencing a rather cold afternoon this past week, I queried the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage on this subject.

"Why," I asked rather philosophically, "did God give us winter?"

There are times when I do muse philosophically with a far-off look.

In this mode, I sometimes think about that philosophical question, "How many angels can dance on the point of a needle?" I've often mused on this question, but the problem is I do not know how big angels are and if they really can dance.

I guess it is in the same category as the question, "If a tree fell in the middle of a forest and nobody's around, does it make a sound?"

I like to think along those lines because there is no correct answer to any of them. So, my answer is right, which makes me feel good about myself. If there is anything I want to do, it is to feel good about myself. After all, nobody else feels good about me so it might as well be me.

With all that in mind, the question that I posed to my wife deserved an answer. "Why did God give us winter?"

My wife was busy in the kitchen at the time, but she turned around, put both hands on her hips and said, "So you could go out and buy a new sweater." Then she went back to her kitchen activity.

Of course, it did not really answer my question. Why is God interested in my sweaters? Why can't he allow me to have a climate that eliminates the use of sweaters? I could handle that.

Then my wife interrupted my muse session and said, "God gave us winter so that we would appreciate summer when it came." Then she went back to her kitchen work.

As I thought about that, I had to admit that she is right.

That happens all the time. God gives us something that is not very comfortable at the time and then when it goes away we appreciate the quiet time.

Just like the neighbors when they are playing their music so loud it is thumping in my head, when they turn it off I appreciate the silence. But when all I have is silence, I fail to really value it.

Getting back to winter. Of course, from my perspective, I cannot see any real value in winter. Sure, some people like snow. The only snow I like is on postcards. I have had enough of snow in my life that I do not want any more of it.

Some people enjoy the snow; sledding, skiing, making snow angels. All of these things I can do without, thank you very much.

However, as I was shivering this terrible winter afternoon, I got to thinking about how wonderful summer really is. In the middle of summer, I do not really appreciate it, as I should. Once it has gone, I sure do miss it.

As I was shivering, I was thinking about all of the positive things about summer. And boy, are there many positive things about summer.

For me, the most positive thing about summer is the fact that I am not dealing with cold. I love the heat and it cannot get too hot for me.

As I was thinking along this line, I remembered one summer afternoon that was so stinking hot that could hardly breathe. My wife was sitting across the porch, she happened to sigh very deeply and say, "I'm tired of this hot weather."

Of course, I love my wife and who wouldn't, but I cannot identify with being tired of hot weather. How can you be tired of hot weather?

For me, I enjoy hot weather and the hotter the better for me. I do not mind sweating. One of the best things about summer is when I can say, "Honey, I would love to do that or go there but it's really too hot." She will smile at me and say, "Yes, I think you're right. It is too hot."

Enough said.
So why did God really create winter? It is in the winter when I am shivering so much, coughing and sneezing that I really begin to appreciate the significance of summer.

In order to get us to appreciate something God takes it away from us temporarily until we come to the point of full appreciation. I believe God knows what he is doing. Going through a trial with all kinds of frustration and aggravation, I begin to appreciate those quiet times of waiting upon God.

I wonder if that's what Peter had in mind when he wrote, "That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:" (1 Peter 1:7).

All those trials of winter lead me to praise God for the glory of summer.

When NEWS Is Simply Too Much Information

News: A Tale of Too Much Information and a Girl - by Simon Plaster - ISBN: 978-0-9914480-7-4. Published by Mossik Press (December 21, 2016). ($7.99 USD Amazon Paperback Edition) Reviewer received book from Author as a trade paperback.

Review by Chris Phillips

There are the classic Who, What, When, Where and Why in this comic thriller.

The cast of characters are settling in for their new situations. They think that nothing much should be happening to upset that world, yet, they are surprisingly wrong.

This tale of innuendo, gossip, lies, misdirection and intrigue comes across authentically as a comedy of errors and misinformation. The premise is simple enough and just subtle enough to provide a good base.

Ma Foster provides housing for her "girls," Bella, Chloe and Kitty. Currently the three in residence are missing. Ma makes a big deal about it. She even goes to the local newspaper when the local police do not act on her fears. She does catch the attention of the out-of-work detective, the new editor of the local newspaper and last but not least the town itself.

The central character is Henrietta, who was named after the town in question, Henryetta, Oklahoma. Henrietta has a lot going for her these days, she has moved to the big city, OKC, OK and landed a job with the local t.v. station. Although this does not help your journalistic career, it does get her in the middle of news and events of the day. The usual players for Henryetta are Wynona Sue, Henrietta's hairdresser mother stars in a "reality" show, see later. Her husband, Professor LeHough, a local bug expert is bald from a surprise shaving. Rodney, Henrietta's boyfriend, camera man buddy and overall best friend is pulled and tugged by Henrietta and her immediate boss Miss Peg. Harold Mixon, the owner and editor emeritus of the local weekly newspaper, just recently put online is trying to have a pleasant and quiet Labor Day weekend with his friends at the International Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.).

The other main characters are Gigi Carpenter, a feminist reporter turned editor of the local newspaper. Max (Maximo) Morgan a would-be gum shoe private detective with a penchant for old murder mysteries, especially Dashiel Hammet's "Fat Man" tales. Then Deano DeBoffo as the "reality" show director trying to shot a pilot for a new show. Finally, Shatner Lapp, as a newsman, publisher, editor and all-round good old boy, comes to town to aid in his Princeton buddy's newspaper problems.

Once these people get involved with the gossip laden townsfolk, the misinformation flies. With more rumors then the facts probably warrant, the three missing girls become more and more objects of speculation and intrigue while very little factual information is given. The rumors start out mild as the missing girls are only looked for by Ma and Maximo.

These rumors and gossip finally lead up to a major "reporter war" between Shat and Gigi. The misinformation here becomes the avalanche cascading over the news and then the townspeople.

So do the missing women get found? Who ends up managing the newspaper? What happens to the hopes and dreams of a reality show? Where do each of these people end up? These and other questions are comically answered in the latest effort of Plaster's

For a fun read, this is the book. For those that follow Plaster, this is a must read. And for anyone looking for something to do on a lazy afternoon, this is a definite read.

4 Stars.

Brexit and Its Impact on the World Economy

What Is Brexit?
Brexit, which is a portmanteau of "British Exit" refers to the United Kingdom's decision to leave the European Union. The European Union is an economic partnership between 28 countries that formed after World War II to help cultivate economic prosperity and cooperation. Following an advisory referendum held in June 2016, U.K. citizens voted 52% to 48% in favor of splitting from the European Union. This result, a surprise to pundits, has had a substantial impact on the economy of the United Kingdom, global markets, and increased volatility in the United States economy.

Effects of Brexit in the United Kingdom
Brexit has caused a sense of uncertainty about economic growth in the United Kingdom. The decision to leave the European Union has increased the tension between the United Kingdom and its international trading partners, and it could cause many multinational corporations to move operations to other countries. HSBC, a global bank with a major presence in London, says it may move 1,000 trading jobs to Paris due to the Leave Vote. This is because the U.K. will no longer be able to take advantage of "passporting", an arrangement where a financial institution headquartered in the European Union can perform permitted activities in any other EU member state where it maintains a branch.

Another major effect that Brexit has had is the depreciation of the British Pound against other major currencies. The impact this has on the British market is a bit discrepant, more specifically the impact on businesses that operate inside the country. Major British exporters will benefit from the declining pound because their domestic costs will decrease while their exports will proportionately increase in value. At the same time, domestic producers that import component parts will experience an increase in costs and a significant decrease in profits. In addition to the significant drop of the Pound, the exchange rates between the pound and other major currencies have reached unprecedented levels of volatility, which could result in more selloffs in the medium to long term.

Brexit's Effects on Global Markets
Brexit can also have a major effect on the markets outside of the United Kingdom, especially ones that conduct business with countries that are members of the European Union. Since the United Kingdom comprises approximately one-sixth of the European Union's economy, any stagnation of its economy could hinder economies of other countries. Britain is one of the largest economies in the world, importing billions of pounds worth of goods and services from other countries. If British consumers and businesses decrease their imports from abroad due to their declining purchasing power, they could stymie the economies of other countries. The Economist Group estimates that for every point decline in the U.K. economy's growth, other European countries will experience one-half to one-third of a point declines, resulting in lower profits for European companies. European stock markets reacted to this news poorly with the FTSE 250 plunging nearly 14% in the days following Brexit. Similar declines were seen in Asian markets as the Nikkei 225 Index and Shanghai Composite Index lost 7.92% and 1.31% respectively. While the major markets have recouped their Brexit losses, uncertainty still remains as to the reaction these markets will have when the
U.K. triggers Article 50 and officially exits the European Union.

Another effect that Brexit had was the increase in investment in what are referred to as "safe haven assets." A few examples of these assets are the Japanese currency of yen, United States Treasury bonds, and gold. These assets all saw a substantial increase in value because many people removed capital they had invested in European markets and reinvested them into these different assets. In fact, demand was so high for U.S treasury bonds a few days after Brexit that an all-time record set for the price of these bonds. U.S treasury bonds, along with Japanese yen and gold, are viewed as the only truly reliable investment option that large institutional investors will turn to in the event of any economic catastrophe, and Brexit's volatility caused them to flee to these assets.

Brexit's Effects on the United States Economy
The effect on the United States market has been noticeable, but not as substantial as in other economies. After the vote, the index of all major U.S companies declined by about five points because many U.S investors sold equities from the stock market and reinvested them in safer treasuries. Shortly thereafter, the fall in equities completely reversed, and the S&P 500 Index reached an all-time high. Despite this increase in volatility, experts do not believe Brexit will have a major impact on the United States economy. According to a Wall Street Journal survey of leading economists, there seems to be no major changes in projected economic growth in this year or the next, and it does not seem that Brexit will have an effect on the U.S unemployment rate.

There are two major reasons that Brexit is not having a substantial effect on the United States market. The first is that the U.S economy is relatively isolated, as only fifteen percent of our total gross domestic product comes from international trade. The second reason is that U.S investors were already anticipating an interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve, and they feared it could have a negative effect on the profits of U.S. based multinational companies. However, the Federal Reserve put that interest rate increase on hold due to the economic uncertainty following Brexit, and this left the U.S markets plenty of liquidity to go higher. In conclusion, Brexit will certainly have an impact on the economy of the United Kingdom and many others around the world, but it does not seem like an event that will cause a complete demise of any economy.

I endorse it. I think it was correct. Contrary to what many have said, it sought to outlaw neither prayer nor belief in God. In a pluralistic society such as ours, who is to determine what prayer shall be spoken, and by whom? Legally, constitutionally or otherwise, the state certainly has no such right. I am strongly opposed to the efforts that have been made to nullify the decision. They have been motivated, I think, by little more than the wish to embarrass the Supreme Court. When I saw Brother Wallace going up to Washington to testify against the decision at the congressional hearings, it only strengthened my conviction that the decision was right.

Martin Luther King, Jr., Playboy interview, 1965. [About the Supreme Court's decisions striking down prayer in public schools.]

Introduction
On January 20, in his first hours as president, Mr. Trump issued a proclamation asserting that there can be no peace where the people do not pray for it. Really?

Who convinced him to issue such a proclamation? One of the five preachers or the rabbi invited to pray at his inauguration? Don't Americans pray enough? Was there a shortage of prayers for peace before World Wars I and II-and every war centuries before-and since 1945? What war occurred due to insufficient prayers? I remember the Vietnam era when draft eligible students were praying for peace up the yin yang. Those prayers did not have much effect, either.

This proclamation is a representative example of the crazy talk of politicians who insert their religious beliefs into the discharge of their secular responsibilities, though in Trump's case it was likely more pandering to the evangelical base. God-hasn't he done enough of that already with his appointments?

Well, maybe not, in his mind.

That thought brings with it concern for the liberal democracy we have enjoyed in America since the country's founding. Trump has created a cabinet of theocrats. What's more, he has pledged to nominate more religious zealots to the high court, as well as additional key posts.

Bad Moon on the Rise
Are we in danger of becoming a theocracy? More so than ever, IMHO.

Trump and friends are equating patriotism with piety. How I would like to put before the president a statement from a Supreme Court justice in Wisconsin more than a century ago regarding intermingling government with religion:

There is no such source and cause of strife, quarrel, fights, malignant opposition, persecution, war, and all evil in the state as religion. Let it once enter our civil affairs, our government would soon be destroyed. Let it once enter our common schools, they would be destroyed... Those who made our Constitution saw this, and used the most apt and comprehensive language in it to prevent such a catastrophe.

(Source: FFRF citation of Justice H.S. Orton of the Supreme Court of Wisconsin, concurring opinion in Weiss v. the District Board, decided on March 18, 1890.)

Susan Jacoby noted that while the new president is himself indifferent to religion, he used the evangelical segment of the electorate to get to the White House. In appreciation, he seems to have delegated his Cabinet picks to zealot-in-waiting Mike Pence, the featured speaker at the upcoming anti-abortion rally in Washington, D.C. whose fanaticism makes the average fundies seem agnostic by comparison. Give Trump credit-he has not (so far) nominated Michelle Bachman, Herman Cain, Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich or Sarah Palin for government jobs. That's the good news. (I'm trying to look on the bright side here.)

The bad news is that he's nominated a lineup of god-besotted extremists, including Rick Perry, Jeff Sessions, Betsy DeVos, Mike Pompeo, Nikki Haley, Sonny Perdue, Jeff Sessions, Scott Pruitt, Tom Price and OMG!-Ben Carson. These nominees are Christian zealots beyond the pale and outspoken opponents of church/state separation. Each could seamlessly fill any Sunday morning as a substitute preacher for the five ministers who offered superstitious babble at the Trump Inauguration.

Along with Mr. Pence, these new leaders of the highest government offices will bring their religious perspectives-and culture war agenda, to the forefront of their secular offices.

Can a theocracy be far behind? Will they advocate for an amendment to our godless Constitution declaring that the United States of America is a Christian nation? It's not so farfetched-a few years ago, a YouGov Omnibus poll found that 34 percent of Americans would favor establishing Christianity as the official state religion in their state. Another slightly bright side note-only 32 percent would go all the way and do the same with the U.S. itself. Small comfort. (This is an average percentage-imagine what the support level must have been in Alabama and Mississippi!)

Hallmarks of a Theocracy
At the risk of frightening a few readers, consider some of the beliefs and policy agendas of these new leaders of key national offices, including the Attorney General and directors/secretaries of H&HS, HUD, Energy, Education, CIA, EPA and Agriculture. You will find belief in and support for:

Varied biblical prophecies, not excluding The Rapture or end-times.
The suppression of critical thought, funding for religious charter schools, science-denying initiatives from climate change to evolution and more religious extremists appointed to fill critical positions at all levels of government.
Vehement opposition to marriage equality and a woman's choice to be a mother-or not (i.e., legal abortion and other reproductive rights).
Disdain for separation of church and state-The Donald will be building one wall where it's not needed and tearing down another where it is.
Changing the Constitution from a secular Republic to Christian Nation theocracy-in part because they believe this is a condition for the second coming of Christ.
Sponsorship and passage of more bills like H.R. 7, the "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act." Every House Republican voted for this bill. If it clears the Senate (Trump will sign it), the Act will deny more than 28 million women access to abortion coverage.

Consider the man rumored to be Trump's first choice for the vacant seat on the U.S. Supreme Court, William Pryor. This outspoken opponent of secular principles in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights has compared the ACLU and its plaintiffs to terrorists. He has railed against gay rights, the teaching of evolution, court decisions legalizing abortion and barring school prayer-while promoting displays of the Ten Commandments on government property. He has compared homosexuality to "necrophilia" and "bestiality" and called Roe v. Wade "the worst abomination of constitutional law." He has long supported the infamous Roy Moore, the Alabama supreme Court jurist who placed a Decalogue plaque in his courtroom and forced jurors to pray.

Advice from an Unlikely Source
The Christian Poet and novelist C.S. Lewis embraced the view that all power corrupts. I wonder if Messrs. Trump and Pence are familiar with The World's Last Night?

I fully embrace the maxim that all power corrupts. I would go further than all power corrupts. The loftier the pretensions of the power, the more meddlesome, inhuman and oppressive it will be. Theocracy is the worst of all possible governments. All political power is at best a necessary evil: but it is least evil when its sanctions are most modest and commonplace, when it claims no more than to be useful or convenient and sets itself strictly limited objectives. Anything transcendental or spiritual... in its pretensions is dangerous and encourages it to meddle with our private lives... Theocracy, I admit and even insist, is the worst corruption of all.

But, to no reader's surprise, I think Robert Green Ingersoll merits the final words. This is but the beginning of one of his speeches on the horrors of theocracy.

The government of God has been tried. It was tried in Palestine several thousand years ago, and the God of the Jews was a monster of cruelty and ignorance, and the people governed by this God lost their nationality. Theocracy was tried through the Middle Ages. God was the Governor-the pope was his agent, and every priest and bishop and cardinal was armed with credentials from the Most High-and the result was that the noblest and best were in prisons, the greatest and grandest perished at the stake. The result was that vices were crowned with honor, and virtues whipped naked through the streets. The result was that hypocrisy swayed the sceptre of authority, while honesty languished in the dungeons of the Inquisition...

If God is allowed in the Constitution, man must abdicate. There is no room for both. If the people of the great Republic become superstitious enough and ignorant enough to put God in the Constitution of the United States, the experiment of self-government will have failed, and the great and splendid declaration that 'all governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed' will have been denied, and in its place will be found this: All power comes from God; priests are his agents, the people are their slaves...

Best wishes, stay well and consider two points of view: 1) There are no alternative facts; and 2) There is no better government for America than a secular democracy.

May this essay rouse your will to help the insouciant masses defend their liberties. As RGI stated in words that represent the light, air and love at issue-"liberty is the blossom and fruit of justice, the perfume of mercy. It is the air and light, seed and soil, dew and rain of progress, love and joy."

Or, if he felt this way about it, which he does not, Trump might say, "liberty is YUGE!"

Silver Hydrogen Peroxide: Disinfecting the Eco-Friendly Way

Silver Hydrogen Peroxide, as the name suggests is a synergized composition of hydrogen peroxide stabilized with silver ions in the form of silver nitrate or infused Silver Nano particles. In either of the cases, the disinfecting property of AgH2O2 remains superior compared to all other known forms and compositions of disinfectants till date.

The more popular choices for chemical disinfectants before the introduction of silver hydrogen peroxide included Chlorine, Glutaraldehyde and Peracetic Acid that were used extensively for all disinfecting and sterilizing operations. But neither of these properly adhered to the requisites of an ideal disinfectant.

The main criteria being:

· No residual toxicity

· Safe for humans and animals

· Stable in applied environment

Chlorine was associated with formation of toxic disinfection by-products (DBPs), Glutaraldehyde had mutagenic and carcinogenic effects and Peracetic acid was found extremely unstable.

On the contrary, Hydrogen Peroxide is a strong oxidizer formed by combination of water with ozone. The bonds between the molecule and oxygen atom are unstable and easily break releasing free oxygen that oxidizes organic matter. Thus H2O2 disinfects by oxidizing cell membranes and inner cell structures of pathogens. It is a great biocide; being a strong oxidizing agent and more effective than chlorine. It is also less toxic and easily biodegrades. Breaking into water and oxygen, it is world's safest sanitizer.

H2O2 is stabilized using silver so as to increase its efficacy. Silver acts both as a stabilizer and an activator. In addition to this, silver is shown to have certain disinfectant properties of its own. Addition of silver greatly reduces the quick decomposition of H2O2. In presence of silver, the peroxide decomposes only in presence of biological contaminants. The decomposed H2O2 oxidizes the cell wall, cell membrane and cytoplasm of the pathogens, the DNA is destroyed thus killing the organism. Silver is known to react with certain proteins in the DNA and act as a biostat, inhibiting further growth of the pathogens. All the while the unused peroxide remains stable in the environment owing to the silver present. This is called "depot action".

Hydrogen Peroxide and Silver are neither toxic nor produce DPBs upon decomposition. It dissociates producing water and oxygen and the residual silver has been proven to have no ill effects on man and environment.

Silver Hydrogen Peroxide is by far the best all purpose multi-utility disinfectant because:

· It is effective against all kinds of bacteria, viruses, yeast, mould and spore formers

· It is Environmentally friendly - practically 100% degradable breaking down to water and oxygen

· Does not create odor or alter the taste of foodstuffs or treated water

· Highly effective over long periods even at very high water temperatures

· Has no toxic effect in its diluted state

· No carcinogenic or mutagenic effect

· Long shelf life: maximum loss of concentration 3% per year

· Low corrosive effect

· Equipment and operation costs are low

Application areas:

Food & Beverage Sector: Drinks Industry, Dairy Industry, Food processing Industry

Agriculture Sector: Animal Husbandry, Fruit orchards and vegetable farms, Tobacco and cotton manufacturers

Air conditioning and Refrigeration Plants: Humidifiers, Cooling towers for elimination of algae

Hospitals, Public and Commercial Buildings: Medical equipment and room disinfection, sanitary disinfectant in commercial institutions, Pharmaceuticals

Consumer goods and amenities: Drinking water, Swimming pools, Wastewater treatment etc.

Build Bridges Rather Than Walls

Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.

~Plato~

I have been writing articles for fifteen years. My goal as been to encourage people to look at themselves, their inner workings and their relationships as a way to come closer to others as a world community. As such, I see it as our responsibility to understand each other, learn what is important to others and find ways we can work together in our common interest. I have heard from many people over the years who are working to find a productive and cooperative way to live in peace with others.

In the past few years, citizens of our planet have increasingly turned against each other. Finding ways to work together has faded and become tarnished as more of us are tempted to turn toward grabbing what we want, ignoring what is good for anyone else, and worshipping our own needs. In my opinion, President Trump has seized on this trend, especially latching on to the anger many people feel and express over not having what they want and feel they deserve.

Although he talks about his goal as sticking up for ordinary people, his decisions so far do not offer much to the common people. The benefits of his decisions are more geared to corporations and the wealthy, which includes him.

He has not mellowed any since his inauguration and appears as petulant as ever. In my study of anger for a book I am writing, I have come to see more clearly the connection between anger and fear. The more anger a person shows, the deeper his or her fear. As far as I can tell, his fear is of not being number one, not getting enough adulation and not being appreciated. With the smallest slight, he retaliates in anger.

Why do walls have a special place in his heart? My sense is that this is his way to protect himself from the ravages of the hordes who would decrease his fortunes. He clings to his fortune and exaggerated sense of himself to make himself feel worthwhile. The fear which underlies anger and rage are often rooted in early life experiences. I don't know enough about his early life to speak with authority, but I would suspect that he suffers from emotional wounds at a young age.

We think of walls and bridges as constructed of concrete and steel. Yet if we feel a need to protect ourselves emotionally, we build emotional walls between ourselves and others to make us feel safe. After resolving our own inner hurt, we can then feel safe enough to start building emotional bridges between us and others.

The natural reaction of a hurt person to anger expressed toward him or her is to hurt the person seen as an attacker. Responding to Trump's anger with our own anger just makes it harder for him to recover from his own sense of being hurt and escalates his tendency to react to everyone he sees as a threat with even greater anger.

I have come to realize that my anger aroused by Trump's actions results from my own pain residing in my inner child. I will work on my own sense of hurt signified by my anger toward Trump. I will work toward a sense of compassion for his inner child and for the pain he has accumulated.

Life Lab Lessons

When you feel anger toward someone, look inside yourself to see what inner hurt triggers your anger.

Before you engage someone else, work to resolve your own feeling of hurt.

See others' anger as a sign of their inner feelings of being hurt.

Once you have resolved your own feelings, see what you can do to help others see the meaning of their own anger.

Help them resolve their feelings of hurt if they will let you.

The Case of the People of Israel Vs God

How many of you have even been in court because of a lawsuit? If so, then the passage from Micah 6:1-8 sounds very familiar. This passage resembles a lawsuit that is being heard in court. Micah calls creation as a witness. The mountains, present throughout all of Israel's history, are called on as witnesses, because they have "seen" all that the Israelites have done. God's creation has witnessed the relationship between God and His people, so it was well-suited to reach a just verdict in this case.

God questioned His people and gave them a chance to respond. God told of His faithfulness to his people in the past and demands obedience to the covenant he established with His people. The Israelites believed that God has wronged them. He challenged them to provide evidence to support their claims. He directed the events surrounding their flight from Egypt. When they remembered what He did for them in the past, their faith was strengthened.

God showed in this passage that he was willing to set things right. He was not unjust to the Israelites, nor did He ask too much from them. He addressed them tenderly and compassionately. He kept the promises He made.

On the other hand, the Israelites did not keep their promises. Spiritual blindness led them to offer everything except the one thing that God really wanted-a spiritual commitment from their hearts. Right behaviour would have resulted from this commitment. God isn't interested in sacrifices. He is more concerned with our attitudes. They come from the deepest part of our lives-our hearts-and show themselves in positive actions toward God and His people.

God displayed considerable emotion in His dispute with Israel. For the Israelites to claim that God wearied them gave the impression that he did something to make them impatient and disobedient. In reality, He had mightily delivered them-from Egypt to Gilgal-in fidelity to His righteous nature and covenant promises.

In verses 6-8, Micah summarizes the laws of Moses into three commands. These few things are what God truly desires of His covenant people, not innumerable sacrifices offered without a commitment to faithful living. The word "mercy" in the Hebrew language includes the idea of loyalty and faithfulness to God's promises. When we repent and walk with God, He will show us mercy. In fact, He loves to show us mercy.

There is a connection between forgiveness and obedience. Since Israel had experienced a gracious remission of her sin of worshipping the golden calf, what sort of people were they to be now? The logical question for them to ask would have been, "What does God require of us?" The logical answer would have been the same things God provided to the Israelites when they repented: mercy, justice and humility. These things aren't always easy to do. They are not one-time accomplishments to be completed and checked off a list. They will help us understand God's heart, and in turn our own hearts will be shaped as we put these things into practice.

Living in humility simply means living by faith. We are not to give in to the evil temptations in this world. We are not to sit around and do nothing. We are to move forward in faith. We are to live aggressively for the truth.

Today, our society is in a situation that is similar to the situation the prophet Micah wrote about. We have lost our ability to function in society the way God wants us to live. He wants us to be a light to our world. People should be able to look at us and see something wonderfully different about us-something different that was created by our faith in Christ.

Some time ago, someone wrote to Billy Graham and ridiculed Christians who talk about things like sin and forgiveness. The writer said, "Why don't you wake up and realize that we're free to live any way we want to? We shouldn't feel guilty when we follow our own desires. There's no such thing as 'right' or 'wrong' in my view."

Here's part of Billy Graham's reply:

"Do you honestly believe there is no such thing as right and wrong? Frankly, I seriously doubt it. Child abuse, poisoning the environment, hacking someone's bank account, cheating a neighbour, lying to your friends, murder... I can think of a whole list of evils that you'd agree are always wrong."

"But why are they wrong? And why are some things like helping others or taking care of the environment always right? Is it simply because society works better if we act this way? The real answer is deeper than this. The real answer is that God has told us how to live---and the reason is because He loves us, and He knows what is best for us."

We can't expect people to embrace a Saviour they know nothing about. We can't expect them to surrender to God when we as His servants are fighting with each other. We are Christ's eyes, ears, hands and mouthpiece. We have the responsibility to live in such a way that others can see Christ in us.

We are encouraged to sacrifice our own thoughts, our own conversations with others, and our own business of minds. We need to sacrifice what is going on within us right now to give ourselves in worship to God.

God is the great helper. If we want to be more like Him, we will naturally grow in our love to help people. We must not try to be like someone else. We must be ourselves. We must think about how God has made us and how we can help others with our unique personality and gifts.

Moving forward in faith means spending quality, quiet time with God every day. This involves prayer and reading His Word. Before we do this, we have to quiet ourselves and our surroundings so we can hear what God tells us.

One of the things God will tell us is His plan for our lives. Sometimes the plan won't make sense to us. Sometimes it will be uncomfortable or painful. If we really walk with God, we will find contentment in spite of the pain His plan gives us.

We have a choice. We can live in the grasp of sin and evil, or we can give our hearts over to Jesus. He gave everything He had, including his life, to rescue us from sin, so it's only fair that we give Him everything we have, including our lives.
